How To Maximize Your Time At Work And Get The Most Done
For most, they believe more time on the job equals more results, but that simply is not the case. It is the focused time on the job that gets the greatest results.
Today I want to share a strategy with you to help you work without fatigue..
It is called: Working the Blocks….
In it’s most simple form it means that you will worked in batched, grouped, blocks of time with separation between them.
You see, most people try to work for as many hours straight as possible- and it is a failed technique.
The brain is meant for a sprint today, so let’s work with it that way.
This means no more than 90-minutes of work at a time, then a 30minute-1hr. rest, then repeat.
Too often we book one thing into the next and into the next….
It is a recipe for failure 100%.
It is certainly a recipe for fatigue and burnout…
So, with that, lets look at our day in blocks…
4 of them specifically…
(2) AM work blocks of 90 minutes each = 3 hrs.
(2) PM work blocks of 90 minutes each = 3 hrs.
That is 6 hours of focused work which most do not do today..
What is focused work?
Focused work is planned work.
Meaning work that you arranged ahead of time- not work that is reactive work which includes unplanned phone calls, immediate email responses, and randomized unplanned work.
Most people have their day filled with unplanned work and there is a huge cost!
Personally, if you are not on my schedule it is almost impossible to get in touch with me during the work week.
This is because I live by my schedule and if you are not IN it, you do not get ON it, especially day of.
Sounds bold- but it works.
I coach so many individuals that give their time away…
Then, they justify it.
Well, I had _________.
Didn’t you freakin know what you had this a week ago? Or, at least a few days ago?
*by the way, last minute cancellations are for losers.
**bad habit, not a winning quality when it comes to character demonstration.
**this tells the other person, “hey, sorry, you are not that important, or at least not as important as this other stuff I have going on.
I mean who just randomly keeps accepting things onto their schedule and allows those things to take them away from their planned, deep, important, mission critical, needle-moving work?
STOP IT DAMN IT!
Stop giving your time away and justifying it!
Coach, 4- work blocks is not enough for me.
Oh yeah- try it.
And, start saying NO to things that are wasting your time and not giving you a yield.
And if you need to, add another 90 minute block.
That is 7.5hrs. of planned and focused work.
If that is not enough time for you- you need help.
If 7.5hrs. of focused work per day is not enough for you, you need to really dig into your schedule, get coached, and find ways to improve productivity- and that most likely has a starting point of not giving your time away because of a level of self-importance you have placed on yourself “being everywhere and doing everything”- trust your team, trust yourself.
Deploy the blocks and schedule them accordingly.
When you look at your calendar and see 4–5 clear blocks of time, how you manage your day and time and energy will change completely.
