The First Step To Becoming a High Performer is Knowing Your Pace
Today- the message is FAST. But the truth is, working fast, grinding, and hustling may not be the answer for all. You must know your optimal pace if you want to win big.
It is time.
Time to step up or step out.
Hear me out on this.
Last week I was speaking to an executive team and I told them this,
“High Performance Companies move fast- that is how they grow.”
I went on to tell them,
“Not everybody is going to be able to hang on for the long haul. Growth for many companies can be sprint- and when it comes to sprinting, some people will sprint with you for a few quarters, others a few yeas, and others a few decades. Do not adapt your model for those who are not long term sprinters.”
I said this because the talk was about burnout….
Why do some of our people burnout?
And the answer is because they can not keep up with the pace of the company anymore…
It is that simple.
Yet- many companies are trying to save the few, when the few that are experiencing this just may be out of runway…
They may not want to spring anymore as their life priorities and goals have change….
Or, they are no longer a fit for what this high performance company has become…
It is OK.
Embrace it- rather than work hard to keep burnt-out talent…
I know this may sound harsh, but that burnt out talent will find another place or start their own thing so they can re-establish a healthy pace for themselves…
But do not adapt your Company and the goals of the company or team for burnt-out talent…
Some of the best companies in the world grow at the rate of rocket-ship acceleration..
Others, a bit slower.
Those that grow slower can also win big!
Just make sure you have the right talent to grow whatever it is you want at the pace you want….
Also, make sure YOU are building or are a part of the right type of company or team..
If you are a slower mover, why would you join a fast team?
If you run a fast team, why would you hire a slow mover no matter how talented they are?
I often talk about “pace” and the important role it plays yet it is often never considered as an interview/ on-boarding question…but, it is a very very important question….
Do you work well in fast-based, high- pressure environments?
Then, describe it for them so they understand and ask the question again.
This will cause some people to become really excited and step up…
It will cause others to contract and step-out….
Either is fine.
We must know if somebody (including ourselves) is willing to do Whatever It Takes.

Now, here is the thing…
If you are part of a fast moving, high-growth environment and you are burning out, it may be time for YOU to step out….
IT IS OK.
Do not feel bad that you no longer can or desire to hang…
Let that go and move towards your next place….
Sometimes we forget that we change…
We are not the same person for ever- and damn that would be depressing if we were.
Instead, embrace that you are changing and change..
Step up into something new…
Step out of what no longer serves you…
You will be very happy that you did.
